In this Swing Time clip, Lucky, Astaire, saves Penny’s, Rogers, job by showing how much she has taught him. The first true dance number with the two, the other being with Fred fumbling and pretending to be a terrible dancer. Both scenes, however, go to the same song, Pick Yourself Up, this scene without lyrics and much more lively with the other more calm, with lyrics, between the two. Music by Jerome Kern and Lyrics by Dorothy Fields

@anziotiamo And you said this because…..you are a professional ballroom dancer, choreographer? Who the hell are you?
@missWLNG …This film was made in 1936, in the midst of the Depression that left 25% unemployed. There is no doubt that it has an escapist value…but it also helped men and women feel good about life….to affirm life in the midst of hard times. As Leonard Maltin says: “This is not only art, but the highest type of art.”.
@goido1951 …He said it because he is a Eleanor Powell fan. Nothing wrong with Powell. She was the world’s greatest female tap dancer. Ginger was an excellent tap dancer…but not the greatest of Fred’s tap partners. Ginger was his greatest overall partner…because she was a superior ballroom and aesthetic dancer. Powell evolved more towards acrobatic performance…and when she danced with Fred, there was almost no male-female chemistry…flashy but flat. Just two soloists miming each other.
Oh, the memories!!! Thank you for posting!
brilliant. poor ginger dancing in those heels!
What kind of suit is Fred Astaire wearing?
They look like they’re floating on air.
@JohnGaltProductions It is a morning suit.
@followthefleet1 Well thanks for the information but the original poster , Powell fan or not, was very rude in calling her hen toed; Ginger as you said is after all the bst known partener of Fred. Thanks.
@goido1951 …Yes, he was rude, but Ginger’s place as Fred’s greatest partner is quite secure. When Fred and Ellie dance it’s like watching, two side-by-side scare crows, or listening to two solo key boards clicking away in perfect sinc. When Fred and Ginger dance, it’s like one soul inhabiting two bodies, or listening to the right and left hand playing a beautiful piano piece….each complimenting the other with its own unique part. There’s a world of difference.
Now THAT’S dancing!!!
all those stomp frats and sororities wish they could do this shit.
That was beautiful they are the best dancers i ever saw.
@nightswimmer99 if they had the money!! Or sneaking in was an option…

I love that floppy look of the feet yet it fits so perfectly.
One of reasons to celebrate life.
so effortless…
Together, they were peerless. And she was such a breathtaking young woman.
I wonder if her shoes were comfortable and what were those things on his feet?
@bubblybabs . In the making of this film Ginger danced so much that her feet actually bled through her shoes. Fred got blisters. Practice was something they both spent hours on. Actually, on this film more than 350 hours. Fred’s shoes are covered with what were called “spats”. He wanted the audience to look at his feet….and Ginger’s dresses were always designed to be comfortable for spinning.
I love this! The are so wonderful together!
amazing
And I thought walking in heels was difficult….
so awesome, gotta love the classics.
